Graduating for some of us is like the best day of our lives. I remember my mum getting the professional camera ready, my aunties and uncles screaming my name as I literally ran across the stage. It was highly dramatic believe me.
This very short story brings me to discuss the GOOD OLD Theresa May. As always her and the party (Conservative) are back at it again with their stupid announcements and legislations that just scream out anti-immigration. Students are being sent home early and are no longer allowed to extend their visas. Theresa May is said to be proposing tighter rules for international student’s – one of those requiring more financial savings when they arrive in the UK (not that they don’t pay enough already!)
According to the BBC, it was allegedly leaked that Theresa May has the audacity to write a confidential letter to her fellow ministers purposing University’s should:
“Develop sustainable funding models that are not so dependent on international students”
Excuse me?! But what on earth does Theresa May mean by this, please by all means explain!
Recent announcement means that foreign students will be forced to leave the UK after they have graduated and will be permitted from working part- time whilst studying here. It baffles me that she can permit this as in the past international students were able to come to the UK and work a minimum of 10 hours a week, which many students would see as being fair considering the expensive payment that they have to pay out to just study in the UK.
It doesn’t stop there… international students will also be prevented from extending their studies in the UK unless they are registered at an institution and as for further education visas, kiss them good bye as they will now be cut from three years down to two- sigh I am already exhausted! But wait there is a little more! Just to make things a little more difficult an introduction in English language testing has been produced.
Now some believe that these tight rules would benefit the country. Minsters of the Conservative Party have stated that this ruling will “further protect the UK’s reputation for educational excellence” It may also help the number of over stayers in this country, which I believe would of course benefit as some do stay to long and if they are here to solely study why not study and jog on back home? Sending them home could be a potential good thing, us that live in the UK may have better chance at getting a graduate job!
On the other hand, of course there’s the side that disagree (feel like I’m back at uni/college) that feel that International students are invaluable to the UK’s economy. International students contribute to billions of new jobs, they pay taxes on clothes, food, drinks and other commodities.
Some may also agree that University/College is a place for young people to interact with international students as they learn to embrace and understand new cultures. I don’t believe that Theresa May knows how much damage she could be causing with this ruling, she is simply damaging the UK’s higher education which, many would consider it the most exported industry.
